No Budget, No Problem: 10 Free Camping Activities

My guide to the best part of camping: the fun stuff that does not cost a penny.

By Adam Brooks | Last updated: 3rd October 2025

When you are camping on a budget, it is easy to get focused on the cost of gear and pitch fees. But it is important to remember why we go camping in the first place: to have fun, to explore, and to spend quality time together. The best news is that almost all the truly memorable parts of a camping trip are completely free.

Over the years, I have built up a list of go to activities that keep my kids entertained without me ever having to reach for my wallet. Here are ten of my family's favourites.

01

Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt

This is my number one activity for kids. Before you go, make a simple list of things for them to find. Keep it simple: a feather, a smooth stone, a Y shaped twig, a yellow leaf, something fuzzy. It turns a simple walk around the campsite into an exciting mission.

02

Build a Den in the Woods

If your campsite has a bit of woodland, you have the perfect place for a den. Find a sturdy tree to act as your base and get the whole family involved in leaning fallen branches against it to create a secret hideout. It is a brilliant team building exercise.

03

Become Stargazers

Getting away from the light pollution of towns and cities means you get a spectacular view of the night sky. On a clear night, lay a blanket on the grass, lie back, and just look up. It is magical. You can use a free app on your phone to identify the constellations you are looking at.

04

Play Classic Field Games

Remember the simple games from your own childhood. A game of tag, stuck in the mud, or just a simple kickabout can keep kids entertained for hours. Campsites are giant, safe playgrounds perfect for this kind of unstructured fun.

05

Master Stone Skimming

If you are camping near a lake or a calm sea, this is a timeless skill to pass on. The secret is finding a perfectly flat, smooth stone. It is amazing how much fun you can have with such a simple, free activity.

06

Go for a "Sounds of the Night" Walk

Once it is dark, take a short, slow walk around the campsite with your head torches on. Get everyone to be silent for a minute and listen. You will be amazed by what you can hear: owls hooting, foxes barking, and the rustling of unseen creatures in the hedgerows.

07

Cloud Gazing

The ultimate lazy afternoon activity. Just lie back on the grass and watch the clouds drift by. It is a brilliant way to spark a child's imagination. Take turns to see what shapes you can spot: a dragon, a dog, a fluffy sheep. It is incredibly relaxing.

08

Read a Story by Torchlight

Everything is more exciting by torchlight. Snuggle up in the tent before bed and read a chapter of a book together. It feels like a secret, cosy adventure and is a wonderful way to wind down at the end of a busy day.
